PHILANGETHEMBA MINISTRYwww.philangethemba.org.zaThe word “Philangethemba” means Living through Hope and describes the church’s ministry in the Molweni Valley. We have an office in the valley and seek to “be” the gospel among this impoverished community within our parish boundaries. Our objective is to walk with the community to help them find solutions to their many poverty related problems and thereby raise their level of Hope. Our programs focus mainly on young people as follows :
1. Education.
We have a full time worker on the staff of the church who presents Scripture Union material in Life Orientation classes in all three schools in the valley and via other extracurricular activities is making an impact on the life choices of learners at all levels. There are extra lesson programs assisting in Maths, Science and English plus a new project to set up libraries and reading programs.
2. HIV/AIDS.
This programme addresses this scourge through support of Voluntary Counselling and Testing facilities at the two health posts in the Valley and the support of two Child Care Centres for orphans and vulnerable children.
3. Income Generation.
This programme aims to stimulate income opportunities for the community. We seek learnership or training opportunities for young people and secondly by mentoring the start up of small businesses. Examples are iBhungezi, the beaded hand-bag business that provides income for some 12-15 women in the Valley and “Hope Horizon” a print/fax/photocopying shop. More recent projects include a computer maintenance and training venture and commercial vegetable gardening.
